Blog Post: Employment agencies-use one today!

posted Monday, February 9, 2009

Have you considered using an employment agency during your job search?  All too often, I hear job seekers state that they would only use an employment agency as a last resort.  When I hear comments like this, I realize that not enough people understand the wonderful benefits that an employment agency can provide.  Let's talk about a few of the amazing benefits they offer:

1)  Employment agencies have established great relationships with local employers and are able to place job seekers in positions that they are ideally suited for.
2)  Agencies can provide you with wonderful feedback on your resume, help you make changes and provide valuable training during your job search.
3)  Agencies don't just help you with temporary work - many firms can help find permanent placement for you.
4)  You can use the services of an employment agency in conjunction with your own independent job search.
5)  All the services that agencies provide job seekers are completely FREE!

Don't be afraid to approach a local staffing firm.  You have nothing to lose and a ton to gain!  There are a lot of great companies out there ready to help you and each one specializes in different industries or employment types.  Get in contact with some today and find out how they can help you in your successful job search!

Definitely true from my experience! However, in my experience in comparing employment agencies between two cities (Dallas-Ft Worth vs. Albuquerque), I have found there are mixed results. There are probably many conditions to consider (comparing Dallas in 1995 to Albuquerque in 2008) - our national economy and the size and breadth of work available to that region. When using a company in Dallas to "stay busy" (40 hrs a week), I was signed up with one company and they had things for me to do as frequently as a full time job. I am signed up with 3 agencies in Albuquerque now (2008) and in the past 4 weeks have only made $259 (net). I just got a great lead on one agency however, because they have a variety of "areas" of expertise, including supplying teachers to local charter schools. They are the first to take the time and imagine with me the potential I hadn't considered before. Would love to hear what others think. I believe that choosing an agency that is right for you is extremely important. As for me, I needed someone who could handle imagining my potential based on my widely varied expertise. Others only concern themselves with facts such as wpm, data entry skills, etc.

I have registered with several employment agencies. I haven't gotten a thing with them. I am looking for regular full-time work. Most of the jobs are temp. Plus they don't pay much. I constantly see ads on the internet for these companies but they never contact me! I was hoping they would help me find a job. I have been unemployed for 2 months. I have only had one interview with an agency.

Please, post the name of the agency you recommend in Albuquerque or Las Cruces. I am seeking a job in either city as a counselor. Tony Garcia

Your ad did not mention the Deborah Calkin Agency based out of Santa Fe. It's a household placement agency that places all over New Mexico and I think internationally as well. I read about it somewhere...newspaper maybe? The website is www.DebsDomesticAgency.com if any of you are looking for a domestic job.

I have been signed up High Desert Staffing, Kelly Services, UNM Temps, and then several others who never called me back and I have pretty much forgotten about their names. These three particularly were helpful to me, although all have told me that times are really slow for them too. I have yet to get another assignment since the one I talked about before. :(

I have actually been thinking of doing what women do in the Third World now... starting a crafts co-op.
