Blog Post: What are employers looking for?
posted Monday, December 15, 2008 11:54 AM
What are employers looking for, anyway? Isn't that the question of the century! If I knew the answer to that one, I'd be rich. A colleague of mine said that more people searched for the answer to this question than almost any other job related topic on the web. I thought I'd take a stab at this one, based on my experience as a recruiter and as someone who works with talented hiring managers everyday. More importantly, I want to hear what you think, so comment on this posting and let it fly. Let's start a conversation about this.
1. Flexibility. Today's business environment mandates that folks at all levels of an organization be open to changing priorities, conflicting opinions, volatile markets, difficult people, and fickle circumstances across the board. Plan as we might, change is the one thing we can rely upon in business. As an employee, we must comfortably wear many hats, be ready to learn, and be humble enough to do anything from signing the paychecks to taking out the garbage. I believe in my heart that we have entered a post-title world. Nobody cares if you're the "director of so and so" if you can't add value to your organization. Your job will change, and change often. The days of saying "that's not my job" are over. Get on the bus. 2. Ownership and Accountability. Employers want people who act as if they own the company. It doesn't matter in the least if you're the janitor or the CEO, your job counts! You do make a difference and your decisions directly affect the profitablility of your company. You should understand your company's strategies and goals. You must know how your role supports the company's mission. If you don't know, ask! You are not just a cog in the wheel....unless you chose to just be a cog in the wheel. Most importantly, should you make a mistake, and you surely will, cowboy-up and admit it like an adult. Finger-pointing, and passing the buck are so 1986! 3. Character. Your character is how you act when nobody's looking, and one of the most important things employers are looking for is strong character. Are you a person of integrity? Do you serve others prior to serving yourself? Do you admit your weaknesses? Do you help those around you? Do you invest in yourself by learning more about yourself and your business? What do you think employers are looking for? Let me know by responding to my post. --Doug Tags
