Blog Post: What is your best job search advice? Let me hear it!

posted Monday, September 21, 2009

Hey guys,

Helping job seekers find meaningful employment is a really fulfilling part of my life, and I hope that some of these tips help you navigate the tangled mess that too often is the job search process.  I want to make something clear.  I don't see myself as an expert at all.  We're all learning here.  With that said, I want to hear from you.  What is your best piece of job search advice?  What worked for you?  What flopped for you?  What are you hearing on interviews?  How are you following up with employers?

Comment on this blog with your best advice.  I can't wait to hear what you have to say.

Doug

Hey Doug,
I am offering free advise, tips and tools to job seekers this Saturday at the Esther Bone Library through a program called, New Beginnings: Navigating the Job Market in these Tough Times. Its Free! Check it out:

My best advise: Try new strategies. If what you have done in the past isn't working, try something new. Need ideas, come to the library for lots of new ideas. You will walk away encouraged, having the beginning of a new plan and some definite possibilities.

As an active job hunter, what I'm hearing and seeing is that the competition among the highly qualified has become more intense. For myself, I've been juggling a combination of strategies which is what I would recommend to others: 1) respond to advertised openings in the newspaper, on company websites, and at reliable job posting websites; 2) attend every worthwhile networking event you can afford - don't be shy, get out there and introduce yourself to people; 3) know specifically what it is you're looking for and tell everyone you know in whatever format is the most comfortable; 4) utilize the tools available on LinkedIn to advertise your "wonderfulness;" 5) follow-up after every interview; being polite still counts. Finally, what's flopped for me is being unprepared for an interview - we all have the occasional off day. Learn from what you did wrong, forgive yourself, and move on. Hope that's helped!
