Blog Post: SNM SHRM Breakfast Meeting – July 12th

Southern New Mexico Society for Human Resource Management (SNM SHRM) will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday, July 12, 2007 from 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. at Best Western Mesilla Valley Inn .

The presentation will discuss “Why Do 2/3’s of Persons with Disabilities Remain Un/Underemployed?” and will educate HR Professionals about essential job functions, myths, tax incentives, the Job Accommodation Network, and disability etiquette and challenge them to look for opportunities to hire qualified persons with disabilities. The learning objective of this presentation is to give HR Professionals the tools and resources that they need in order to successfully integrate a person with a disability into the workforce.

The panelists will include:

  • Kathe Stark of 2K Compliance & Training, Inc. will discuss job accommodations. She will explain essential functions and how to get people to think outside the box ~ from how things are done to what needs to be done so persons with disabilities are not excluded.

  • Margaret Malone, Las Cruces Workforce Connection will discuss the benefits of hiring a person with a disability, including tax credits/incentives and how employers can apply for them.

  • Leah Rhule, Executive Director of the Employers’ Disability Resource will discuss systems that can help employers, such as the Business Leadership Network, and the Job Accommodation Network. She will also discuss the process for arriving at reasonable accommodations

  • Shirley Gonzales, Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) will discuss disability etiquette, and provide statistics & examples of assistive technology.

    The cost is $11/person. Please RSVP to Doris Gleason @ 527-7552 or gleason@nmsu.edu - no later than Monday, July 9th.

    This program has been approved for 1.0 credit hour toward PHR and SPHR re certification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).
