Blog Post: Accomplishments: The Key Player in a Great Résumé
posted Friday, December 28, 2007 4:05 PM
“It is most expedients for the wise … to be the trumpet of his own virtues.”
-Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing Is your résumé “much ado about nothing?” If it’s lacking accomplishments – it is! First I must explain that accomplishments are not job descriptions. In most cases, hiring managers can figure out what you did by your job title. In the little space you have to make a memorable impression, don’t explain what you did at each position – tell how well you did it. For example, let’s say you were a burger flipper at a local fast food chain. Don’t waste time explaining how you flipped burgers before they dried out too much, applied the precise amount of ketchup and mustard and always remembered to add two pickles. Instead let’s focus on what made the manager take notice, maintained 100% order accuracy at the special orders window, decreased average wait time at the drive-thru 47 seconds, 100% attendance and punctuality and received ‘Employee of the Month” three months in a row. Even if I weren’t looking for a burger flipper, I’d still call the second guy in for an interview because there are attributes in his personality I’m looking for. See the point of accomplishments versus mere job descriptions? In my next blog posts, I’ll share the words you can use to woo employers with your achievements and then follow that up with a list of hints as to where you can find material to include in your accomplishments.
Good luck Jobing! Margaret
