Blog Post: What the heck is business casual? Business professional? Huh?
posted Monday, February 4, 2008 4:58 PM
Business casual, business professional, casual...what in the world does any of this mean? These terms apply to dress code, of course. My favorite soapbox...what to wear. I didn't know what these terms meant until someone enlightened me before a job inerview, so to pay it forward, I'll do the same for you. Here are the best definitions I could muster.
Business Professional: This is the old-school, buttoned-up, suit and tie look of Madison Avenue and the banking business. The look really requires a suit and tie, dress shoes, a pocket square...the whole nine. Enterprise Rent-A-Car is good example of a company that insists on this look. I love dressing this way, but I don't wear it too often. Jobing.com's culture is a little more laid-back. However, it is appropriate for professional job interviews, television appearances, important meetings and presentations the board of directors. Wear this stuff when you absolutely need to look your best. If the suit fits properly, people will be very impressed. And please NEVER button the bottom button of your suit jacket. You'll look like you just fell of the turnip truck. Sorry, but it's true. Business Casual: Business casual is much more flexible. Usually, this can range from khakis and a company polo to dress trousers, with a tie and sport coat. Most companies are cool with dressing this way now. What it isn't....jeans, T-shirts, athletic shoes etc. Don't be that guy. I saw a guy in a polo shirt with a tie on once...this is NOT cool. Casual: Lot's of times, this can mean jeans and a t-shirt with athletic shoes. Ask your HR person if this is OK. Just make sure that you don't look too bummy. Make sure that your clothes are clean and neat, with no holes or tears. Albuquerque casual: In some parts of the ABQ, this can mean no clothes at all! Save this for the weekend. :) Got a better idea....let me know, just post a response to my blog below. Hey, that rhymed.--Doug Community Comments
