MD- PALLIATIVE CARE

Shift: Varied

* Provides consultation in palliative care, symptom management and supportive care to the patient in order to meet the general medical needs of the patient to the extent that these needs are not met by the attending physician. Consults with attending physician and the Interdisciplinary Team to establish a plan of care and assures communication with all physicians involved with patient.

* Participates in the interdisciplinary palliative care services team meeting and provides direct care and appropriate related services to patient and family.

* Provides real time feedback to PCPs and referring physician regarding clinical and operational guidelines to optimize patient care and clinical efficiency.

* Oversights the work of the palliative care team RN, APN or PA's direct patient care activities and timeliness of documentation.

* Remains available for inpatient and outpatient consults five/days/week; assure appropriate coverage and response after hours and on weekends. Assures proper provider staffing, including vacation coverage. Participates in on call coverage.

* Provides clinical leadership in the development and review of appropriate clinical protocols and processes that support the appropriate referral and consistent care. Participates in the development, adoption, and implementation process for clinical standards for care in all setting in which Palliative services are provided. Oversees and is accountable for the overall quality of care and clinical outcomes within the assigned programs and facilities.
* Ensures both patient and provider satisfaction and develops plans for improvement.

* Provides input into the palliative care team's financial, clinical, and service quality performance; budget; capital plan; and personnel issues. Meets measurable program goals in clinical, quality and financial realms.

* Attends and participates in requested QI, Peer Review, Care Management meetings and planning aligned with program key strategies and goals.

* Maintains coding and encounter data standards for completeness, accuracy, timeliness and reimbursement level., including legible documentation

* Meet and maintain all provider credentialing and QI standards.

* Provides full and appropriate documentation of direct patient care services to support successful billing for all services.

* Mentors and educates all new physicians providing Palliative Care coverage on Palliative Medicine service standards and relevant PMG standards.

* Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, literature review, in-services, and workshops.

* Works with Nursing, Care Management, Hospice, Hospice Medical Director and other manager as appropriate to assure that clinical protocols, utilization review, case management, quality assurance and compliance programs are implemented according to hospital policies.

* Provides leadership in the identification of education needs of the physician staff, and development of effective outreach strategies as aligned with the overall work plan. Participates in ad hoc activities to support educational and outreach goals of the palliative care services in alignment with program key strategies.

* Assists with oversight and is accountable for all resource utilization within the assigned programs and facilities.

* Performs other functions as required.

Skills / Requirements
Skills: M.D., board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine or eligible to sit for board in 2 years. Board certified in Internal Medicine, family practice or oncology, State of New Mexico Medical License required..

Knowledge: Requires detailed knowledge of palliative medicine in terms of theories and practices to serve as the resource or educator to other practitioners in the medical field. Knowledge of interdisciplinary team concept. This staff member must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of patients served. The staff member should have experience with ethics consultations. Knowledge of quality of improvement method is preferred.

Abilities: Mental Power: Ability to make decisions that require significant analysis and investigation with solutions requiring significant original thinking.
Mental Power: Ability to determine appropriate courses of action in more complex situations that may not be addressed by existing policies, procedures or protocols. Decisions include such matters as changes in staffing levels, order in which work is done, and application of established procedures.
Physical Power: Walks, sits, stands, arm/wrist/hand movement, lifts., and legible handwriting
