MILIEU COUNSELORS (Direct Care Workers) Provides direct care to all patients. The patient population may include but may not be limited to a specialty group of special needs patients with either mental retardation or development disabilities. Functions within the multidisciplinary team in deliverance of patient care within this specialty program. May be assigned to and needs to be able to competently perform on any of the units, including the Child or Adolescent Chrysalis Unit, or Child RTC . Assure that clients are provided with a safe and therapeutic environment under the direction of a Program Director and/or Shift Supervisor.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
I. CLIENT OBSERVATION:
Observes the client upon admission and throughout treatment.
Pertinent observations are communicated to the Therapist and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Completes daily charting log and accurately records the clients- activities in program.
Reports all critical incidents to Program Director and/or Shift Supervisor as incidents occur.
II. CLIENT INTERACTION:
Participates as multidisciplinary treatment team member in the client-s total treatment.
Performance is satisfactory when:
Orients clients to unit structure, rules, and routine and to unit staff and other clients.
Assists in the admission, transfer, discharge, and other procedures as assigned following Desert Hills policy and procedures .
Assists clients with activities of daily living in accordance with facility policy and procedures.
Ensures constant supervision of clients while on duty.
Assists in structuring client time in therapeutic activities. Will initiate activities which are appropriate to the age group and to the level of functioning of the clients.
Develops therapeutic relationships with clients individually and in-groups as assigned.
Carries out precautions prescribed for specific clients according to facility policy and procedures.
Provides relevant input into the multidisciplinary treatment team.
Implements the objective and interventions developed by the multidisciplinary treatment team.
Assists in planning for client discharge and involves client in process, as assigned.
Maintains safe and therapeutic environment.
Documentation relevant to care is complete and accurate.
Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with clients, family and/or significant others.
Demonstrates ability to operate safely and effectively during emergency situations.
Demonstrates ability to document client-s response and progress to treatment plan objectives as identified in the treatment plan.
Exhibits appropriate boundaries and therapeutic role modeling.

Demonstrates knowledge of adolescent development and behaviors.
Recognizes and participates in the chain of command as per Desert Hills policies and procedures.
Must be at least 21 years of age (state regulation).
Possess a high school diploma or general education diploma or GED.
Prefer college degree or two years of experience in health-related field with knowledge of adolescent, child, and/or mentally retarded or developmentally disabled populations, as appropriate.
Prefer a valid NM Driver-s License and ability to be insured under automobile insurance policy.
Must demonstrate acceptable verbal and written communication skills in an interview and application
