Must be thoroughly familiar with Section 106 compliance requirements and knowledge of New Mexico Administrative Code (NMAC) relating to cultural resources. Responsible for problem solving, addressing issues, and communicating with Program Manager and/or the Client as appropriate. Must have excellent writing and communication skills. Ability to direct archaeological field and laboratory studies and to ensure a safe work environment. Ensures work adheres to city, state and federal laws, guidelines, policies and procedures as well as guidelines and EEO/affirmative action policies. This position is under general supervision of the Program Manager. Will be responsible for managing all aspects of archaeology projects and tasks including supervision of personnel as well as meeting budgets and schedules.
The following duties and responsibilities are included for this position:
- Conduct archival searches, surveys, monitoring, testing, and data recovery activities.
- Author and/or contribute to reports and oversee report accuracy.
- Provide QA/QC review of field methodology, documents, site forms, and reports.
- Instruct field personnel on methods of inventory and provide verbal and written instructions as needed.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards, and guidelines.
- Experience with GPS devices with knowledge of GIS software and land surveying equipment.
- Remain current on historic/prehistoric research in the region.
- Remain current with educational and permitting requirements.
- Interface with clients, including attending project team or scoping meetings as needed. Able to effectively discuss all aspects of a cultural resource project including regulatory requirements, methodology, findings, research questions, and results etc. to non-specialist clients and the public.
- Must hold a graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a related field.
- At least eight years of experience in fieldwork and report completion.
- At least five years of experience supervising and providing leadership for other professionals, as well as scheduling and budgeting of projects.
- Experience conducting and supervising archaeological fieldwork and managing multiple projects simultaneously while meeting budget and deadlines.
- Extensive experience writing and producing quality cultural resource reports.
- Familiarity with fieldwork, report guidelines, and standard forms of New Mexico Historic Preservation Division and ther land management agencies in New Mexico and Southwest.
- Experience in federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to cultural resource management.
- Must be permitted for State of New Mexico as a PI and hold or be able to obtain other permits including BIA, National Forests, BLM areas, and Navajo Nation.
