  •   POSITION SUMMARY:
    Goals: AVID tutors will guide students toward academic and personal excellence that will reach far beyond their secondary school years. AVID tutors will be active participants in the learning, growth, and personal development of students with the goal of preparing students to successfully attend college.

    About AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an educational program for middle and high school students that supports student preparation for college through an academic elective course that teaches necessary learning skills, reinforces the academic core, and encourages rigorous student course taking.

    General Duties: AVID tutors will support middle school or high school students enrolled in the AVID elective course by providing direct instructional support to students with the assistance of an AVID elective course teacher. In addition, they will serve as role models to students. Tutors will work a minimum of 2 hours per week, spread out over 1-2 days per week. Tutors will work September 12th, 2017-May 12th, 2018. Tutors will not report during standardized testing, on snow days, or on school district holidays. AVID tutors are critically essential to student success in the AVID elective course and beyond!

    Under direct supervision of the principal and AVID coordinator and with the assistance of the AVID elective teacher, tutors will perform the following tasks:
    1. Take an active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of AVID students.
    2. Serve as a role model/mentor to AVID students by being a lifelong learner, demonstrating appropriate academic and social behaviors, and wearing appropriate attire at all times.
    3. Determine from student’s notes and discussions, the concepts that need to be taught or retaught.
    4. Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, etc.
    5. Become familiar with the materials in the AVID Curriculum Libraries.
    6. Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students.
    7. Conduct tutorial sessions in all areas of mathematics; therefore, a strong math background is needed for high school math tutors.
    8. Conduct mini-lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation.
    9. Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
    10. Work with students in any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming, clustering, revision, and editing.
    11. Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.

    REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Bachelor’s degree or evidence of earned college credit in the field of education;
    • successful enrollment in a science, math, or liberal arts Bachelor’s program
    • Previous student tutoring or mentoring experience
    • Passionate belief in the ability of all students to graduate college-ready
    • Former AVID program participation or experience working with a school or
    • community-based academic support program
    • Effective communication skills with students and adults
    • Excellent writing skills;
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
    • Demonstrated responsibility and reliability
