Position Summary

The UNM-Gallup Campus's Center for Academic Learning (CAL) offers free academic support for all enrolled full-time and part-time UNM-Gallup students. The center provides tutoring services in a variety of disciplines, such as literacy (reading/writing), math and sciences. CAL collaborates closely with faculty to ensure that students meet course and assignment expectations effectively and independently.

CAL has an Education Specialist/Math & Sciences opening. This position provides academic tutoring to a wide variety of individuals, creates and implements tutorial programs that guide and assist students with writing assignments, problem solving, and test preparation. The position provides support with math across the curriculum and basic science. The position supervises student tutors, coordinates with Math & Sciences instructors, develops training curriculum and materials, and designs outreach and promotional materials for the CAL. The position is expected to collaborate and positively interact with Mathematics, Physical & Natural Sciences faculty, attend division meetings, and assist the Math Coordinator with special assignments.

The Education Specialist reports to the Dean of Instructions.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Mathematics or a Master's degree in Education with a Mathematics major.
  • Evidence of college math coursework: Calculus, Chemistry, differential equations and/or other sciences.
  • Ability to explain mathematical and sciences concepts for training curriculum.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles.
  • 3 years full-time teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level.
