Position Summary

The University of New Mexico, Health Sciences Center, Department of Internal Medicine, seeks a non-clinical faculty member to join the Division of Palliative Medicine. This position is Spiritual Care Specialist/Lecturer II with salary of $62,086.88 per year. The University of New Mexico Hospital is a safety net Hospital and the only level I trauma center in the state caring for diverse and underserved population. The growing interdisciplinary Palliative Care team cares for patients in both inpatient and outpatient consultation settings, and is home to the only Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship program in New Mexico. Team members include physicians, advanced practice nurses, social workers and Arts-in-Medicine providers. Successful applicants will possess the ability to work collaboratively on an IDT caring for a diverse and underserved patient population in inpatient and outpatient settings, outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with patients, families and staff, the ability to explore and address Spiritual and Existential concerns, and have a strong interest in Palliative Care education to learners of all levels and backgrounds. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Accredited master’s degree in theological studies or its equivalent.
  • Ordination, commissioning or endorsement by an appropriate religious authority according to the standard practice and policy of that authority.
  • Four units (1,600 hours) of clinical pastoral education (CPE) as accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Commission on Certification and Accreditation, or the Canadian Association for Pastoral Practice and Education (CAPPE/ACPEP); one of these units may be an equivalency.
  • Board Certification by a recognized certifying body (APC, NACC, NAJC, etc).
  • Five or more years of palliative care chaplaincy experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Maintain membership in a certifying body (APC, NACC, NAJC, etc.) by participating in a peer review every five years, documenting at least 50 hours of continuing education each year, and providing documentation of endorsement with his/her faith tradition.
  • Specialized studies in Thanatology, End of Life, Bereavement and Grief
  • Eligible for Specialty Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Care by APC or NACC.
  • Leadership experience in professional organizations such as APC, NACC, etc.
  • Completion of additional, palliative care specific training such as CSU Palliative Care Chaplaincy course, ELNEC, CAPC or NHPCO spiritual caregiver trainings.
  • Participation in chaplain related, publication worthy research
  • Publication in peer reviewed journals.
