Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center (UNM HSLIC) invites applications for the Division Head, Public Services. We are looking for a motivated person with a high degree of managerial, analytical, and critical thinking skills to lead the Public Services unit of the library. The Division Head is responsible for managing the provision of frontline library and information services for all users and participates in the direct provision of these services. In addition, the Division Head will manage programming to support student success, wellness and engagement initiatives. The Public Services unit is responsible for the library’s single service desk, providing reference, circulation and interlibrary loan/document delivery services as well as managing the library’s study rooms, student virtual reality lab, patron printing and maintaining the library’s open hours. A successful candidate will have strong managerial skills and fluency with library systems to provide high quality services for student, faculty, staff and members of the public. The Division Head will cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with faculty, students and staff in support of campus teaching, learning and research.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible position with a primary appointment in the UNM School of Medicine. Appointment is posted as non-tenure track, open rank, to be determined based on qualifications; Salary range: $65,000 - $70,000


  • Responsible for effective administration of the Public Services unit (reference, circulation, interlibrary loan/document delivery, study rooms, virtual reality lab, student printing and other services). Oversees day, night and weekend operation of the library.
  • Manages a division of the library, including two directly reporting staff supervisors, three indirect reporting staff, and several student employees. Engages in hiring, performance management and staff scheduling; develops staffing plans to ensure the division has needed coverage and skills to deliver its services and maintain the library’s open hours.
  • Coordinates, participates, and collaborates with library’s subject specialists in the design and delivery of high quality reference and information services, including regular needs assessments and service evaluation to assure continuous quality improvement.
  • Responsible for the development and training of all Public Services staff, including identification of skill sets required for quality information services and implementing training to assure attainment of competencies.
  • Provides consultation on searching for literature and effectively managing citations with bibliographic management tools.
  • Coordinates HSC campus-wide meetings with student success coordinators.
  • Coordinates library’s student success, wellness and engagement programming including workshops such as citation management and writing, time-management and study skills.
  • Assists with provision of instruction in bibliographic research methods and information literacy.
  • Develops policies, procedures and communications related to Public Services and overall library operations.
  • Participates as a member of the HSLIC’s senior management team and collaborates with library division heads on short-term and long-range planning, and participates in library-wide projects.
  • Represents the library on appropriate campus and consortial committees, and projects to improve library and campus services.
  • May be required to work a flexible schedule, including occasional nights and weekends, to provide coverage due to illnesses, vacations or special events.
  • Attends local and regional library meetings, including occasional travel.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the trends and issues in academic libraries, higher education and scholarly communication.
  • Participates as a HSLIC faculty member in committee service, strategic planning initiatives, and scholarly activities.

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate Library/Information Science Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association
  • Five years professional experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant experience in providing frontline library and information services, including high-level knowledge of electronic and print reference sources in the health sciences.
  • Significant experience providing reference and public services to a variety of constituents.
  • Experience coordinating library programming with input from university stakeholders and constituents.
  • Ability to develop and implement training for information and reference services.
  • Demonstrated library supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with library systems such as Springshare, Atlas, OCLC WorldShare and WorldCat Discovery.
